Cyclone Remal Devastates West Bengal and Bangladesh

Kolkata ,May 27, 2024 -:Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal, the first major cyclone of the 2024 North Indian Ocean season, ravaged West Bengal and Bangladesh, claiming at least 84 lives—65 in India and 19 in Bangladesh. With wind speeds between 100-135 km/h, Remal made landfall on the Sundarban Delta on May 26, causing massive destruction. In West Bengal, the cyclone destroyed 2,500 houses and damaged 27,000 more, while in Bangladesh, tidal surges and flooding damaged homes, crops, and livestock, leaving 800,000 people displaced.

Major cities like Dhaka and Kolkata faced severe flooding, power outages, and disruptions in transport. Rescue operations are underway, with governments mobilizing resources and international aid agencies providing support. As Remal's remnants move northeast, continued heavy rainfall and landslides pose additional threats. The disaster highlights the urgent need for improved cyclone preparedness and resilient infrastructure in vulnerable regions.
